Erewash Borough Council is again warning residents of another new wave of council tax scams that offer bogus refunds.
Fraudsters are using texts, emails and phone calls to contact residents offering to claim refunds for overpayments on their behalf while another scam sees them demand payment for arrears.
With the new Council Tax bills due to be issued from April, scammers have also tried to convince homeowners that their property is in the wrong council tax band and offered to claim refunds for a £150 fee, even though band reassessments are available for free.
The conmen claim to represent local councils or the Valuation Office Agency and some use government branding to make their scam seem genuine.
Councillor Wayne Major, Erewash Borough Councils Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Resources, said: Sadly, these scams never go away and all we can do is try to raise awareness among residents. At this time, with the new financial year approaching, we see the scammers preying on people again. Please stay on your guard, be aware of these scams and look out for any vulnerable family or friends.

Council Tax band reassessments are available for free from the Valuation Office Agency at gov.uk while further information for anyone having trouble paying their Council Tax should visit www.erewash.gov.uk.
