Erewash MP Adam Thompson issues statement on Derbyshire Care Home closures

The Erewash MP has issued a statement in response to recently announced plans to close care homes in the borough.

Labour's Adam Thompson said that the proposals for Briar Close in Borrowash, Lacemaker Court in Long Eaton and The Bennerley Care Home in Cotmanhay showed that the elderly would bare the brunt of Conservative-led Derbyshire County Council’s financial mismanagement.

His statement said that, as the authority faces bankruptcy, new papers reveal plans to close both Bennerley Fields and Lacemaker Court care homes, alongside critical day centre services at the Lacemaker, which he said many residents rely on for daily support.

He described the plans as "truly abhorrent" adding "Once again, the elderly residents of Erewash are paying the price for Conservative financial failures.  He continued: "This is a shocking attack on Erewash’s most vulnerable residents. Once again, the elderly are being made to pay the price for Conservative financial failures.

"These reckless plans will disrupt lives and leave many without essential care support. My heart also goes out to the hardworking carers and staff now facing an uncertain future. I urge Derbyshire County Council to withdraw these damaging plans immediately. I encourage residents across Erewash to contact their Conservative county councillors, and ensure that this betrayal is remembered next May."
