Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) is urging people to get their chimneys swept after the Service was called to two house fires in less than one hour.
In 2024 alone, Derbyshire firefighters attended 59 chimney-related house fires, an almost 20% increase on the previous year, and already this month, crews have attended four chimney fires. This underlines a concerning upward trend that requires immediate attention and action to prevent further incidents.
With temperatures expected to remain low throughout February, and people increasingly turning to open fires and log burners as energy prices soar, DFRS is asking people to remember the importance of keeping chimneys clean. This helps reduce the risk of a fire in the home.
A statement from DFRS said that it is essential that chimneys are swept at least once a year, or in line with guidance so they are clean. It is also important to ensure the appropriate fuel is used to reduce the risk of fire in the home.
Prevention Group Manager David Diggins said: “I would urge everyone to ensure their chimney is swept to help prevent a fire in the home. On Friday 7th February, crews attended two house fires within less than an hour of each other. One of the houses had a chimney that hadn't been swept for two years.
“Sweeping your chimney removes deposits which have built up due to the burning of carbon-based fuels, such as coal, wood, oil and gas. It makes sure there is a clear and safe passage for gases caused by the burning process, which are combustible, making the risk of the chimney catching fire less.
“If you’ve not had time or simply forgotten, please book a chimney sweep today.”
