Officers from Ilkeston Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have asked vehicle owners to be vigilant after becoming aware of several vehicle thefts which have occurred in the area.
Specifically, vans are being targeted and it is believed the aim is to retrieve any tools, equipment or stock from inside.
Guidance includes to ensure that vehicle doors are locked and windows are fully closed and keys removed, avoid leaving items on display in the cab, and to remove items left in the rear, especially when being left overnight, to park in well-lit, busy areas, and to use security devices such as steering wheel, handbrake, tyre and fuel filler locks, a tracker and an alarm and/or immobiliser.
Anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour or vehicles is being asked to report it using the non-emergency number 101 but in an emergency, to use 999.
Community events are regularly staged, and are designed for residents to attend and discuss concerns with SNT Officers face-to-face, and to receive free crime prevention advice and equipment. Details are frequently posted on social media.
