In celebration of the recent National Apprenticeship Week, a local branch of a national car spares and service chain has welcomed more apprentices, as part of a commitment to developing future talent in the automotive and retail sectors.

Locally, Carly Boam, Centre Manager at Halfords on the Wyvern Centre in Derby, who has been with the firm for 11 years, is working closely with Derby College Group (DCG) to support apprentices in their professional development. Passionate about nurturing young talent, Carly is dedicated to providing meaningful opportunities for students to gain valuable industry experience and build successful careers.

Through this collaboration, Carly has played a pivotal role in creating pathways for apprentices and work experience students. By offering hands-on learning, industry insights, and mentorship, she ensures that young people gain the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the workplace.

The partnership with DCG is designed to bridge the gap between education and employment, equipping learners with practical skills, real-world experience, and a direct route into the automotive sector. By providing structured apprenticeships and work placements, the national firm is continuing to invest in the workforce of the future, ensuring that students leave not only with qualifications but also with invaluable workplace experience.

Carly recently delivered an inspiring presentation to Level 2 learners, showcasing the diverse career opportunities available within the company. During the session, she also introduced an upcoming work experience programme, designed to provide students with practical, hands-on industry exposure and a stepping stone into the automotive sector.

Speaking about the initiative, Carly said: “We are committed to helping young people launch their careers in a fast-growing, dynamic industry. Apprenticeships provide an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop industry-relevant skills, and open doors to exciting career paths—whether as an MOT tester, Master Technician, or Garage Manager.

"Our collaboration with Derby College Group plays a key role in helping students transition from education into employment. By offering meaningful work experience, we are helping learners gain confidence, build practical skills, and prepare for successful careers in the automotive sector. It is incredibly rewarding to see young talent flourish, and I am proud to be part of an ongoing investment in the next generation of skilled professionals.”

Jess (pictured), a current apprentice, shared her experience: “I’ve learned how to tackle real problems and gained hands-on experience with the latest tools and technologies in the garage. Carly’s encouragement has helped me build my confidence and skills every step of the way.”

As one of the largest further education colleges in the country, Derby College Group is dedicated to supporting employers in developing a skilled and sustainable workforce. The organisation collaborates with around 3,000 employers across various industries to provide high-quality training and apprenticeship opportunities.

Gareth Sullivan-Pearce, Motor Vehicle Team Manager at DCG, praised the impact and nature of the partnership with the retailer. He said: "Carly and her team have been exceptional in supporting our apprentices, offering hands-on training and mentorship that helps bridge the gap between education and the workplace. We are proud to work alongside such a dedicated partner to support the next generation of automotive professionals.”
