Scouts, leaders, and supporters are working tirelessly to replace their aging scout hut, which is “falling down” and “crumbling”.

The 1st Sawley Scouts are on a mission to raise over £90,000 to build a new scout hut, ensuring the future of their group and providing a vital space for young people in the community.

Phil Jackson, the leader of the group, said there were many structural issues with the existing building: “It is not fit for purpose, we can’t adapt it.”

It is hoped that with growing numbers of young people eager to join, the new facility will offer a modern, safe, and accessible space for activities, meetings, and community event.

Amy, aged 13, is a scout, and one of those who would benefit from a new building. She said her favourite part is helping in the community.

[I also like] the activities we do, the camps, and the different activities for the badges,” she added.

The new building will replace the current scout hut, which is over 50 years old

Fundraising efforts are already underway, with Scouts, leaders, and supporters organising various events. The group is also seeking donations and grants to help reach their ambitious target.

They have recently surpassed £55k in funding, helped by a successful craft fair on 22nd February that raised £331.

Local businesses and residents are encouraged to get involved by donating, attending fundraising events, or spreading the word.

The new building will also be opened up to local residents and businesses, to serve as a community hub.

With the community’s backing, the Scouts are hopeful that they will soon have a new home, ensuring Scouting in Long Eaton thrives for years to come.

The group has meetings on the following nights:

  • Monday – Cubs 8-10 years
  • Tuesday – Beavers 6-8 years
  • Wednesday – Beavers 6-8 years
  • Thursday – Cubs 8-10 years
  • Friday – Scouts 10 -13 years
  • Sunday – Explorers 14-18 years

The building is also available for hire during the day, whether it be for a birthday party, or a regular group meeting.

To support the 1st Sawley Scouts in their mission to build a new hut, donations can be made via their GoFundMe page.
